Bola Tinubu  AFTER DARKNESS COMES THE GLORIOUS DAWN My fellow citizens, I want to talk to you about our economy. It is important that you understand the reasons for the policy measures I have taken to combat the serious economic challenges this nation has long faced. 2. I am not going to talk in difficult terms by dwelling on economic jargon and concepts. I will speak in plain, clear language so that you know where I stand. More importantly, so that you see and hopefully will share my vision regarding the journey to a better, more productive economy for our beloved country. 3. For several years, I have consistently maintained the position that the fuel subsidy had to go. This once beneficial measure had outlived its usefulness. The subsidy cost us trillions of Naira yearly. Such a vast sum of money would have been better spent on public transportation, healthcare, schools, housing and even national security. Instead, it was being funnelled into the deep pockets and lavish bank accoun

Where Do We Go From Here, by Lasisi Olagunju

Lasisi Olagunju “Ninety-three million, four hundred and sixty thousand Nigerians registered to vote in the last elections; only twenty-five million, two hundred and eighty six thousand, six hundred and sixteen came out to vote. People who voted in the last presidential election all voted to escape Buhari and whatever he represented. They did not vote for pain. Whatever wisdom informed the choice they made, the underlying goal was that they wanted life lived well in abundance of peace. So, why would the man who got the throne throw everyone under the bus in order to get a fishing right in the shark-infested seas of Bretton Woods? The man is even now rolling out Buhari’s ineffectual, expired medicine as placebo – a regimen of dummy drugs. So, where do we go from here? Like characters in Caryl Philip’s novel, ‘The Final Passage’, it should be clear to us now that we can’t escape Nigeria. We are in a turbulence……..Stop putting your trust in princes and principalities. Can’t you see that

Tinubu’s Last Hurdle, by Muyiwa Adetiba

Bola Tinubu  The last time we checked, Lagos State was supposed to be the ancestral home of our President Bola Tinubu. Some dispute that, insisting he is from Osun State. But none, to the best of my knowledge, has ever linked him to Ogun State. Yet, it seems the gods of Ogun River and the ancient gods of Lisabi have adopted him as their son. In a mystical and deeply spiritual way, Ogun State played a prominent role during the run-in to the Presidential election. It was during one of his ‘pilgrimages’ to Ogun State, that he received the courage and clarity to make the famous ‘Emilokan’ statement. To the uninitiated, I confess I am one of them, that statement seemed a sign of a meltdown – an apocalyptic meltdown to quote a mutual friend. As the English would say ‘What was he smoking? Or sniffing? Or drinking’? It however turned out instead to be a coded message to those he had a pact with, a succession pact of sorts. I still have a problem with the ‘Emilokan’ statement though.   It sug

Mr. President: X-Raying Oronsaye report for implementation, by Dr Muiz Banire

Image
Few weeks ago, I made a revisit to the issue of the cost of governance as an albatross in Nigeria, having sometime ago harped on the same issue in this column. During the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, this issue of paramount importance to the survival of the country was unsurprisingly treated with levity in the usual lackadaisical attitude of that administration. Despite drawing the attention of the administration to the Stephen Oronsaye Report on restructuring of government agencies, and the attendant drowning of the country under the yoke of the cost of governance, the administration never deemed it fit to pay any serious attention to the report in terms of implementation. The best effort made was lip service through the promise of implementation, which never materialized. As remarked above, it is not shocking as it is a notorious fact that, quite apart from the compromise involved in the failure to implement the report, the Buhari administration lacked both the politi

Segun Awolowo, 60 Years After: Today in history

Image
Exactly 60 years ago, July 10, 1963,  the first child of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Barrister Segun Awolowo died in a car accident. Chief Awolowo received the devastating news in his Calabar prison. In his tribute to his son, Awolowo wrote: I did not sorrow because l have been taught that there is no death as such in the fullness of our individual time, every one of us will be translated from this terrestrial sphere into the celestial realm There will be what we call joy in the latter realm at the happening of this event. There will certainly be joy at least for the reason that the Soul of the translated will be freed from the shackles of the body and will merge with the Over-Soul which is the Mind and Consciousness of God Man in a living Soul, and his body is only the instrument through which the Soul seeks to evolve its personality. At transition, the body returns to the dust from which it was formed, and the Soul, which is the essence of God in our being returns to its source from whi

Ibadan and its 12 kings, by Lasisi Olagunju

Lasisi Olagunju  Ile Ife and Oyo Ile were at the very core of the cultural and political essence of the Yoruba. While the whole of the Yoruba have managed to preserve Ile-Ife as home for all, Oyo Ile, some 200 plus years ago, was lost to the pillage of the Fulani and to its own internal political sins and crimes. Ile-Ife and (New) Oyo have remained polar powers; sometimes they compete bitterly with their leaders playing captains for opposing forces. In good times, they ‘giraffe’ and do copy-and-paste. I was present when the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, crowned his senior chiefs and Baales in February 2009. I was the spokesman of the Olagunsoye Oyinlola government in Osun State which approved the crowning of those chiefs and Baale from one end of the ancient kingdom to the other. The Ooni today, in his majesty and glory, wears his crown; his top chiefs wear their own crowns with the understanding that Cat will remain Cat and Tiger will remain Tiger. It was an unu

Governor Adeleke’s List Of Commissioner-Nominees

Gov Adeleke The Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has published the list of his commissioner-nominees. Among them is the governor’s sister in-law and wife of the former governor Isiaka Adeleke, Mrs Adenike Folasade Adeleke. However, contrary to the rumor that Governor Adeleke nominated his uncle Professor Ademola Adeleke, they are not in anyway related as Professor Ademola is from Ijeshaland.
