Tani Adewumi: From Homeless Shelter To Stardom, Ten Year-old Nigerian Kid Transforms His Family In The US. ~By Kola Olaniran
When Tani Adewumi arrived in the US with his parents who fled the excruciating conditions of their poorly-managed, Boko Haram-ravaged country, Nigeria, he had no inkling of a life-changing dramatic turnaround that would transform his family.
Days after their arrival in the US, Tani’s parents, Kayode and Oluwatoyin Adewumi faced a precarious condition, if they knew where their next meal would come from, they did not know where they would lay their heads on. They were poor, they were homeless until the City of New York (NYC) provided them a homeless shelter where Tani’s journey to stardom began.
Right there in the homeless shelter, Tani was enrolled in school where he kept the right company of friends who enjoyed playing the chess game. 8 year-old Tani later emerged winner of the New York State chess championship for his age group. Thereafter, his story went viral.
“A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men” says the scripture (Proverbs 18:16). Tani’s story has featured in the CNN, NYTimes, the Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and some other notable media outlets.
Shortly after his victory went viral, shakers and movers of the global society have been showering encomiums on Tani. Former President Bill Clinton posted a message on his Twitter account that he would love to meet with Tani, days later, Tani met with Clinton in his New York office. Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, former President Barack Obama and so many global figures also sent their messages of praise for Tanitoluwa.
As Tani’s story riveted a global attention, his father Mr Kayode Adewumi opened a GoFundMe account to meet their basic need of decent shelter. Trust the kind-hearted people of the world, money began to pour in.
The popular saying, “one good thing deserves another” played out after settling down, the Adewumi family did not keep joy to themselves, they too have been giving back to the society. Their foundation sponsored a back to school event where they reached out to other children in need. They distributed school supplies to kids, contributed to food pantries that provide food for the needy and they also helped other less privileged members of the society to pay their rents especially those who lost their jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year 2021 at age 10, Tani did it again, he won another chess competition to become a national chess champion.
Whatever your hand finds to do, please do it with all your might.
