Dr Rahmon Adedoyin, Oduduwa University Proprietor Sentenced To Death By Hanging.

Image
Adedoyin  Justice is served. Special thanks to the Nigerian police officers who unraveled the circumstances surrounding the death of Timothy Adegoke, a post graduate student of the Obafemi Awolowo University who was murdered by the Proprietor of Oduduwa University, Dr Rahmon Adedoyin in his Ile Ife Hilton Hotel. Contrary to the people’s doubt, the professionalism that was deployed to uncover the bizarre murder was so phenomenal that one would recommend promotions for all the police officers involved. The Abuja-based Timothy travelled to Ile Ife to sit for his exams and lodged at Adedoyin’s Hilton hotel where he met his untimely death. Adedoyin and his accomplices later killed Timothy for ritual purposes. Justice Adepele Ojo while delivering the judgement said that the circumstantial evidence presented to the court showed that the killing of Mr Adegoke was masterminded by Adedoyin.

President Bola Tinubu’s Inaugural Address

Image
President Bola Tinubu  My Fellow Citizens, I stand before you honoured to assume the sacred mandate you have given me. My love for this nation is abiding. My confidence in its people, unwavering. And my faith in God Almighty, absolute. I know that His hand shall provide the needed moral strength and clarity of purpose in those instances when we seem to have reached the limits of our human capacity. This day is bold and majestic yet bright and full of spirit, as is our precious nation. As a nation, we have long ago decided to march beyond the dimness of night into the open day of renewed national hope. The question we now ask ourselves is whether to remain faithful to the work inherent in building a better society or retreat into the shadows of our unmet potential. For me, there is but one answer. We are too great a nation and too grounded as a people to rob ourselves of our finest destiny. This nation’s journey has been shaped by the prayers of millions, and the collective sacrifices o

Advice For President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: How Nigeria Can Grow Faster, Stay Safer, And Work Better By Bayo Oluwasanmi

Image
Bayo Oluwasanmi Today, May 29 offers Nigeria a chance for a fresh start. A new president brings new policy ideas, a new team, and a new store of political capital. But Nigeria’s slate is anything but blank. The list of problems facing Nigeria’s new chief executive – old and new, chronic and acute, social, economic, Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen terrorism – is dwarfed only by the universe of ideas about how to solve them. My advice to the new president: 1.  The 1999 fraudulent constitution must be discarded to make way for a new constitution. 2.  Boko Haram terrorists must be bombed out of existence. Fulani herdsmen terrorists must be contained or caged within their own northern territory. 3.  State and local government police should replace the ragtag central police aka NPF. 4.  Eliminate posts of junior ministers of state. 5.  Scrap all duplicitous and redundant federal agencies.  6.   Reduce salaries, allowances, and emoluments of federal legislators. 7.  By any means necessary let

“Just Shut Up”, Angry Nigerians Blast Buhari’s Daughter by Kola Olaniran

Image
Hanan and Buhari   The palpable anger in Nigeria reached its highest crescendo when Nigerian Twitter users unleashed the worst form of vulgar abuses on Hanan Buhari. The Afro beat king Fela Kuti’s song “when trouble sleeps, yanga go wake am up” reverberates this week when the attention-seeking, beautiful Hanan, daughter of Nigeria’s outgoing, worst President Muhammadu Buhari got a dose more than she bargained for when she took to her IG account to rate her father’s performance in office. In her account she wrote, “My father is a silent achiever”  This statement did not go down well with Nigerian youths mostly of Hanan’s age who are suffering the excruciating economic hardship under Buhari’s mismanagement of the Nigerian economy. In my personal opinion, Muhammadu Buhari deserves condemnation not commendation because under his regime, life has been nasty, brutish and short as most Nigerians suffer the worst hardship in the history of the country.  Under Buhari’s regime, over 70,000 Niger

The 'Foolish Man' and his mega refinery complex by Bayo Onanuga

Image
Billionaire Aliko Dangote Some years ago, Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man invited media leaders to a luncheon at then Protea Hotel in Ikeja to mark his 55th birthday. Some of his guests sat around  him at the centre table. They chatted freely. Discussions about our country, the  state of the economy soon veered into discussing the absurdity of our country, being a major crude exporter, and also a major importer of refined petroleum products. Our colleague from a major business paper said the local conditions were unfavourable to any investor who wanted  to build a refinery. He then  made a remark that I believe he would live to regret: "Only a foolish man will build a refinery in Nigeria". Aliko who had listened to all our business and political pontifications, interjected: "I am that foolish man". A pin drop silence enveloped the table as he  dropped the unexpected news: "My company has just decided to build a refinery in the country. But we are doing

On Buhari’s Eight Years in Office by Lasisi Olagunju

“The president stands down next week. He said sometime last year that he had done well and history would be kind to him: “I want [Nigerians] to analyse how things were when we came in and how they are when we’re leaving.” Today, he insists he has done very well. But, history has no friend and no fixed address. Its judgement comes now or maybe, later. Just as I write this, a BBC report popped up online. Its headline: ‘Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari leaves legacy of kidnapping, inflation and debt’. And the report’s conclusion: “The fact is that Nigerians were safer, better off and less in debt before Mr Buhari took over, and many will remember him for presiding over the toughest eight years they might ever face.” Exactly one week from today, Muhammadu Buhari will stop being our president; his place another shall take. But what kind of leader has he been? The best assessment of a leader you get, not from his fanatics – boys who eat directly from the leader’s palm – but from men with cocks th

Unacceptable: Fela’s Son, Seun Kuti Slaps A Police Officer In Lagos by Kola Olaniran

Image
Seun Kuti Kudos to the Nigerian police officer who exhibited a high level of professionalism during an altercation with Seun Kuti, a popular Nigerian musician and son of the late global icon, Fela. What led to this altercation was not immediately known but in a video that went viral after the incident, Seun was heard spewing venom at the officer by angrily asking, “are you mad, are you stupid, do you want to kill me?” As Seun was going to his SUV, the officer followed him and Seun suddenly turned back, pushed and shook the officer vigorously. At this juncture, a woman believed to be Seun’s wife tried to calm him down but his vicious anger sent the woman back inside the vehicle. Seun later pounced on the police officer by dealing a hot slap to his face while the officer still remained calm. Onlookers were seen trying to resolve the matter but it was not shown in the video how the melee ended. Most Nigerians condemned Seun’s action as irresponsible as the attack on the officer in unifo

Buhari’s toothache and Tinubu’s search for investors - Etim Etim

Image
Give President Buhari some credit; he’s been a little bit more honest in many instances than a host of other politicians. Even in certain circumstances where a little lie would have saved him some embarrassment, he would opt for the truth. Last week, the President told a bewildered nation that he was staying back in London after attending the coronation of King Charles 111 to see his dentist. Many were surprised that the President couldn’t have his teeth checked at home. Staying back in London, with all the attendant costs, just to fill dental cavities or pull a tooth is quite wasteful and speaks to Buhari’s habitual self-indulgence. But why did the President not lie about his mission in the UK? He could just have told us that he was staying back in London to meet with some dignitaries in connection with Nigeria’s intractable power problems, or that he was taking a week to rest. Even when he had an ear infection in mid-2016, the President was quite open about it. Buhari’s candour makes

Season Of Apologies And Forgiveness. By Muiz Banire

The holy books say that there is time for everything in life. There is time to live and there is time to die. There is time to laugh, and there is time to cry. Just as in weather, there is the dry spell and there is the rainy season. There is winter, so also is there summer. The import of all the above is that nothing is static in life; everything that has a beginning must certainly have an end. In fact, to every such activity, the commencement date signifies the expiry date. There is a Yoruba proverb, “lala to roke, nle ni mbo,” which literally means everything that goes up must come down. It is the law of gravity. There is no place other than public office where this is a truism. Every single public office holder that assumes office will certainly, at a point, vacate the office, whether the occupier likes it or not. This is best illustrated by the common saying that “office lo n r’ehin akowe, bi o ba fi office sile, office a fi e sile” as the he must definitely leave the office one

Mike Adenuga and the Ijebu spirit. By Lasisi Olagunju

Image
It was almost a missed call; or, more appropriately, an ignored call because the telephone number was unusual - an eight digit number. But, something told me: pick it, and I did. “Hello, is that Mr. Lasisi Olagunju?” “Yes, sir,” I answered, waiting for what would come next. “My name is Mike Adenuga...” It took me two, three seconds to process what I just heard: Adenuga? Of Globacom? The voice sounded real. I heard myself exclaim “Ha!” He heard me too and burst into laughter; he laughed heartily. Then, he followed up; telling me that he called to appreciate what I wrote. “I have just read your most recent article,” he said while commending the language, the choice of words. That was four years ago. He was referring to my August 19, 2019 piece I entitled: “Awujale's Ojude Oba 'swansong.'” He, particularly, thanked me for the mention I gave him and his company in that piece. But - I told myself - words about him and his exploits were in not more than two paragraphs, yet he was
