Fascism: Chimamanda Chides Soyinka On Unrestrained Language.

Popular Nigerian writer and a global icon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has cautioned a Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka on the use of unrestrained language.

Professor Soyinka had earlier voiced his opinion on Datti Ahmed’s comment on the extinction of democracy in Nigeria in a manipulative election that is being contested in the law court. The literary giant had used ‘fascist’ to describe Datti Ahmed’s comment that is capable of heating up the already charged polity.

Speaking on the Arise TV, Chimamanda says “I have a lot of love for Professor Soyinka, I admire him, I respect him as a writer, as a thinker, I think everyone should read ‘The Man Died’…..but at the same time, I disagree with him about this particular issue…because I respect Professor Soyinka so much, I went back and watched his interview…..I did not see any reason that Mr Datti Baba-Ahmed’s interview would have been termed fascist, facsist is really strong word that makes me often think of Mussolini’s Italy…”

To Chimamanda, Datti Ahmed’s statement is “fairly reasonable because any democracy rooted in the constitution must be applied to the letter. Using unconstitutional means to elect an official is capable of jeopardizing the purpose of democracy. It’s very undemocratic that some people were disenfranchised from electing their choice candidates as hoodlums were seeing terrifying innocent voters at various polling units accross the country.
